Dear Miss Crystal,

I am ten years old. My Grandma Rose is helping me send this note to you. I think you could tell me the truth about fairies. My mom and my grandma say that they believe in fairies and elves, but my dad says they aren’t real, even though I thought I saw one on the playground. What do you think?

Dear Dazed and Confused in New Orleans,

First of all, let me say that I believe you; you thought you saw a fairy and told others about it. For you, the experience was real and that’s all that matters.

Even though I’m a grown-up, I don’t have all of the answers about fairies and elves; apparently, they are very illusive creatures . . . but that doesn’t mean they aren’t real. In truth, I’ve never seen such “little folk” with my own eyes, though I spied wisps of light from the corner of my eye while visiting magical sites near Glastonbury, England.

Also, when I was your age, I thought I heard little “pixie” voices talking in my room when I woke up from a deep sleep late one night. They called my name and  disagreed with one another regarding whether to use the formal or familiar version of it. I found that quite amusing! Their little voices were so cute.

I am particularly fond of poets and their poetry because they are so good at artfully capturing the mysteries of nature and the power of myth and legend . . . their words sometimes enable us to “hear” such pixie voices from wilder, stranger realms by way of our imaginations. Poetry is a kind of HeartSong, a way of communicating meaning that cannot be conveyed any other way.

I like this clever poem entitled “The Fairy’s Wandering.” It was written by S.K. Lindeman: The fairy’s wandering, her wings are light; her shadow so haunting, drips into night. But clutches of darkness clasp not her wings, for fairy of lightness flies upon dreams.

I encourage you to write your own poems about fairies, pixies, and elves. It is through creative imagination that real magic occurs. A great scientist named Albert Einstein put it this way: “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For while knowledge defines all we currently know and understand, imagination points to all we might yet discover and create.”

Mr. Einstein also said this: “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”

Live and love as though everything is a miracle, Little One, and your life will always be joyful, your blessings many. I send you and your family . . .

Many Warm Regards, Crystal Claire Waters
